Arjen Knook

Arjen Knook is a sculptor. He is also one of the founders of Atelierbreda. Arjen loves the traditional art of sculpting with all kinds of materials such as clay, plaster, bronze, and plastics. At the Art Academy of St. Joost in Breda, Arjen specialized, among other things, in stone sculpture. A key factor in sculpting with stone is finding the right material. Arjen travels to special places in Europe where he expects to be able to find certain types of stone. Years ago he travelled to Italy, where they are famous for their marble. It was while he was there that the idea arose to organize holiday sculpture courses here in Holland.

Another course that strongly shaped Arjen was the MTS architecture study, where he learned moreabout all kinds of materials and completed an internship at a company that did restoration construction. It was here that he discovered his fascination for natural stone and what would later lead him to the Art Academy. Arjen wanted to learn how to work with stone. For years he spent his spare time giving shapes to stone. Throughout years of experience, the lessons with an artisan sculptor in stone began to give good results in a short period of time and thus his practical experience and artistry came together. Arjen has a lot of experience in teaching. He has worked as a teacher in schools and also in immigration detention projects where he was a part of a group who taught to imprisoned foreigners. He has also taught in a juvenile detention center. What really appeals to Arjen in his teaching is dealing with people. Everyone is different; they look different and interpret things differently. His approach involves a customization to each individual. He sees it as the job of a good visual arts teacher to see which technique and form suits an individual better and to help his students gain control over this.

Arjen Knook as a teacher

Arjen teaches his students to view the world and their work in 3D. That seems logical, but practice shows that people naturally do not see and create in this way. That learning process remains fascinating for Arjen and he finds it a huge challenge to get his students to work at the highest possible level with this approach in mind. Atelierbreda stands for high quality of the pieces that are created. This takes effort, but also makes the journey of creation worthwhile. In addition to keeping Atelierbreda running, Arjen also makes commissioned work and free work. The commissioned work is versatile and varies from sculpture support, promotional gifts, funerary monuments to complete care for the realization of sculptures and exhibitions for visual artists.
